For Abandonment
April-May 2016
This piece was knitted for the abandoned building in an old rock quarry (the second set of photographs). The building is covered in graffiti, old tin cans, and broken bits of furniture; it has a past. In Syracuse, NY, there are actually three quarries- two of which are abandoned and often overtaken by joggers, artists, and the alike. I knit this piece in order to call attention to the eeriness in the abandonment; the place had an obvious previous industrial use. By filling the negative space it invites viewers to ask "Why is this here? What was here before this?" The piece was also displayed in a gallery setting which totally changes the context, in the gallery it erethral and creates a spiritual space where as in the quarry it is jarring and out of place. The piece is knitted on a knitting machine with cotton thread.
Materials: cotton yarn, wire, fishing line
